Maldives Prepares for Climate Change

5 June 2008: As part of the UN World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) strategy to implement the recommendations of the Davos Declaration, a project aiming to integrate the Maldives’ tourism into its climate change adaptation activities is underway.

The project, done in cooperation with the UN Development Programme (UNDP) through funding from the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), seeks to, inter alia, develop an environmental practices information exchange mechanism among resorts, streamline national policies, and implement pilot projects on water management and erosion control. Speaking about the project, Gabor Vereczi, project coordinator at UNWTO’s Sustainable Development of Tourism Department, said, “this project will also serve to reinforce Maldives as an international leading destination in environmental management and climate response.” [UNWTO Press Release]
