UN Secretary-General Discusses Food Security and Climate Change at UNIS-UN Conference

UN International School’s UNIS-UN 6 March 2009: Speaking at the annual UN International School’s UNIS-UN conference, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon discussed the linkages between food security and climate change. The conference, which gathered students from around the world, convened from 5-6 March 2009, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, under the theme “The Food Crisis: A Global Challenge.”

High-Level African Women Call for Gendered Solutions to Financial, Food and Climate Change Crises

UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) 4 March 2009: The UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) organized a press conference with high-ranking African women who are attending the 53rd session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW53), at UN Headquarters in New York, US. The panel called for gender-specific responses, including plans and programmes to address the impacts of the financial, food and climate change crises.

UNFCCC Releases Note on Possible Elements for Amendments to the Kyoto Protocol

4 March 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a note prepared in response to a request made by the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP) at its sixth session, held in August 2008, containing possible elements for amendments to the Protocol pursuant to its Article 3, paragraph 9 (FCCC/KP/AWG/2009/3). This Article relates to the consideration of commitments for subsequent periods for Annex I parties, which are to be established through amendments to Annex B. Annex B consists of a list of parties together with their respective quantified emission limitation or reduction commitments expressed as a percentage of base year or period.

UNFCCC Secretatriat Releases Review of Austria’s National GHG Inventory

March 2009: The UNFCCC has released the report of the individual review of the GHG inventory of Austria submitted in 2007 and 2008 (FCCC/ARR/2008/AUT). The expert review team (ERT) finds that Austria has submitted a complete set of common reporting format tables for 1990-2006 and a national inventory report. The submission is complete in terms of geographical coverage, years and sectors, as well as in terms of categories and gases. The inventory is generally in line with Revised 1996 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, with the IPCC good practice guidance, with the IPCC good practice guidance for Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF), and is generally complete and of a high quality.

Poznań Strategic Programme on Technology Transfer 3 March 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released its first newsletter for 2009. The publication contains a focus section on the Poznań Strategic Programme on Technology Transfer and contains: information and upcoming activities related to each of the Bali Roadmap building blocks (mitigation, adaptation, finance and technology); summaries of key UNFCCC statements; a guest column titled “Putting Energy into a Global Agreement,” authored by Björn Stigson, WBCSD President; and other UN climate news. EU Environment Ministers Adopt Conclusions on a Comprehensive Post-2012 Climate Agreement

Czech Presidency 3 March 2009: The first Environment Council of the EU under the Czech Presidency took place on 2 March 2009, in Brussels, Belgium. The Council adopted conclusions further developing the EU position on a comprehensive post-2012 climate change agreement, which is due to be concluded at the UN climate change conference in December in Copenhagen.

FAO Report: Fisheries Need to Prepare for Climate Change

Fishing-reliant communities in the developing world are extremely vulnerable to climate change. 2 March 2009: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has released “The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2008,” which recommends that existing responsible fishing practices be more widely implemented and current management plans be expanded to include strategies for coping with climate change.

CSD-17 Chair Gerda Verburg (the Netherlands) 27 February 2009: The Intergovernmental Preparatory Meeting (IPM) for the 17th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD17) took place from 23-27 February 2009, at UN Headquarters in New York, US. The IPM’s role was to provide a forum to discuss policy options and possible actions to enable the implementation of measures and policies concerning agriculture, rural development, land, drought, desertification and Africa – the thematic issues under consideration during the CSD16/CSD17 two-year “implementation cycle.”

UN-HABITAT Hosts Meeting of African Mayors on Climate

 Mayors of Major African Cities Voice Concerns Over Climate Change 27 February 2009: UN-HABITAT hosted the Regional Conference of Mayors of Capital Cities of Africa from 26-27 February 2009, in Nairobi, Kenya. Focusing on African cities and climate change, the conference included discussions on: sea-level rise in coastal cities; flooding; regional collaboration; access to basic services; finance; and additional urban problems that can inhibit adaptation. Participants stressed that, despite their relatively small contribution to the causes of climate change, African cities are suffering severely from this phenomenon. [UNEP Press Release]

FAO Highlights Importance of Planted Forests

Industrial roundwood production from planted forests, Brazil 27 February 2009: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has released a study titled “Wood from Planted Forests.” The study underscores the critical role that planted forests play in securing future wood supply and in providing other ecosystem services. The report underscores that the importance of planted forests will increase in the future, given their ability to sequester carbon and contribute other services, such as soil and water conservation.

ECA Partnership Forum Stresses Importance of Forging Africa’s Common Position on Climate Change

Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) 27 February 2009: The annual Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Partnership Forum, which took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in February 2009, offered the ECA and its development partners the opportunity to exchange views and provide an update on ongoing initiatives, as well as to showcase new ones. This year’s discussion was dominated by the African climate change initiative, a programme initiated in 2006 and led by the Climate Information for Development in Africa (ClimDev Africa) programme – a joint partnership between the African Union Commission, the African Development Bank and the ECA.

UN Secretary-General in Tanzania: No Region Will be More Affected by Climate Change Than Africa

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addresses the diplomatic corps, academic community and the media in Tanzania 26 February 2009: In a lecture titled “Dealing with a Changing World - African Solutions to Africa’s Challenges,” delivered in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underlined that Africa will be particularly affected by climate change. He also recalled that he had declared 2009 the year of climate change, both because of the Copenhagen Conference in December and because of the need for a global green new deal to address the economic crisis.
