During this session, the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) is scheduled to consider, in the light of the outcome of the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference, the enacting of the technical and operational measures to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from international shipping that were disseminated in 2009 for voluntary trial application. The MEPC will also discuss the possible mandatory application of these measures based on a proposal by Japan, Norway and the US to add a new section on energy efficiency to MARPOL Annex VI Regulations for the prevention of air pollution from ships. The MEPC will also continue developing the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) to cover ships with non-conventional design and propulsion systems that are not covered by the current index formula. In addition, the Committee will continue its consideration of market-based instruments to supplement the technical and operational measures. A working group on GHG issues will be convened during the session.

15 March 2010: The 21st Inter-sessional Meeting of the Conference of the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which convened in Roseau, Dominica, on 11-12 March 2010, discussed the outcome of the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference among other things. 
15 March 2010: During a meeting on 15 March 2010, in Brussels, Belgium, the Council of the Environment Ministers of the EU adopted conclusions on climate change regarding the “Follow-up to the Copenhagen Conference.” 
3 March 2010: The Ramsar Convention’s Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) met in Gland, Switzerland, from 22-26 February 2010, for its ‘mid-term workshops’ to further progress its 2009-2012 Work Plan. 
15 March 2010: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published the Overview Schedule for the 11th session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP 11) and the ninth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 9), which are due to convene from 9-11 April 2010, in Bonn, Germany. 
12 March 2010: The Fifth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health, which was held in Parma, Italy, from 10-12 March 2010, was a carbon-neutral event organized around the theme “Protecting children’s health in a changing environment.” The Conference concluded with the adoption by 53 European Governments of the Parma Declaration on Health and Environment. 
14 March 2010: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) convened a meeting to discuss the fifth replenishment of its Trust Fund, during which participants considered replenishment options between US$3.6-4.6 billion for the period 2010-2014.
