16 February 2010: Anada Tiéga, Ramsar Secretary General, and Hartwig Schafer, Acting Vice President, Sustainable Development Network, World Bank, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that aims to “establish a framework of cooperation between Ramsar and the World Bank in exchange of technical expertise and capacity building related to the development and implementation of climate change projects in wetlands in the context of the World Bank-financed climate change portfolio.”
8 October 2009: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands has announced that the theme for 2010 World Wetlands Day (WWD), celebrated on 2 February, will be “Caring for wetlands – an answer to climate change.”
17 June 2009: The Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) selected the theme “Conserving land and water = Securing our common future” for the 17 June celebration of World Day to Combat Desertification.
1 June 2009: The recently-released report of the seventh meeting of the Liaison Group of the Biodiversity-related Conventions indicates that the group discussed, among other topics, options for enhanced cooperation with regard to work on cross-cutting issues such as climate change.
12 May 2009: The Communication, Education, Participation and Awareness (CEPA) Programme of the Ramsar Secretariat has released advance information on Worlds Wetlands Day 2010, which will be celebrated on 2 February around the theme “Wetlands, Biodiversity, and Climate Change.” The theme relates to 2010 being proclaimed the International Year of Biodiversity and to the impacts of climate change for present and future wetland ecosystem health.
