The World Meterological Organization (WMO) is hosting the Third Lead Authors Meeting for the Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX) for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Submitted comments to the the SREX Expert Review, which took place from 26 July-20 September 2010, will serve as the basis for discussions. The 30th Session of the IPCC in 2009 decided to prepare the SREX with the involvement of the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR).
This workshop is being convened to consider: the summary reports of the first and second phases of the Nairobi work programme; and views and information by parties and relevant organizations on the effectiveness of the Nairobi work programme in fulfilling its objective, expected outcome, scope of work and modalities.
This event is jointly organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Climate Research Programme (WRCP). The aims of the meeting are to examine existing methods for understanding extreme weather and climate events, to identify areas for improvement in the production of reliable data and to start to develop strategies for forecasting these extreme events.
