September 2009: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation on the margins of the World Climate Conference-3 (WCC-3).
The Vienna Energy Conference 2009 convened at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, Austria, from 22-24 June 2009, and was jointly organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Austrian Development Cooperation, the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), and the Global Forum on Sustainable Energy (GFSE).
The third Summit of the C40, a group of the world’s largest cities committed to tackling climate change, was held in Seoul, South Korea, from 18-21 May 2009.
5 June 2009: The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has released “Towards a Low Carbon Travel and Tourism Sector,” a study developed as a result of collaboration between the UNWTO, the World Economic Forum, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and tourism and travel business leaders.
29 May 2009: The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) adopted policy guidance on Integrating Climate Change Adaptation into Development Co-operation.
The international workshop on Adaptation to Climate Change in West African Agriculture, held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, from 27-30 April 2009, brought together experts and decision makers to discuss and recommend climate change adaptation options for the agriculture, livestock, forestry and fisheries sectors in West Africa.
4 May 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat organized a Technical Workshop on Increasing Economic Resilience to Climate Change and Reducing Reliance on Vulnerable Economic Sectors through Economic Diversification, which met from 28-30 April 2009, in Cairo, Egypt. The workshop was convened under the Nairobi Work Programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change (NWP).
22 April 2009: Addressing the Boao Forum for Asia on “Tourism and the Financial Crisis,” which convened from 17-19 April 2009, on Hainan Island, China, Geoffrey Lipman, UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Assistant Secretary-General, highlighted the role that business and leisure travel can play in the G20-led economic recovery.
April 2009: The International Maritime Organization (IMO) will host a conference titled “Thinking Outside the Box: Borderless Strategies to Combat Climate Change,” scheduled to take place on 30 April 2009, in London, UK.
31 March 2009: In the lead up to the 2 April 2009 G20 Summit, in London, UK, the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has stressed the potential role of tourism as an economic stimulus and in the green economy.
