Food Security Experts Call on Negotiators to Address Agriculture in a Climate Agreement

18 November 2009: Over 60 leading agricultural scientists and policy experts released a statement stressing the need to include consideration of agriculture, specifically the ability of crops to adapt to climate change, in any agreement at the climate change conference in Copenhagen.The statement notes that “crop-by-crop” and “country-by-country” efforts are needed to ensure adaptation in the agriculture sector.

The statement calls for immediate investment to support crop diversity, highlighting the role of seedbanks. The statement also notes that failure to address the negative impacts of climate change on agriculture could place at risk other efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
