26 April 2010: UN World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Josette Sheeran has indicated that the intense droughts in Niger are escalating the humanitarian crisis and contributing to mass migration from rural to urban areas as well as to neighboring countries. She has announced that WFP will step up its aid to support 2.3 million people, particularly pregnant women and children, in the arid eastern Sahel region.

This Regional Conference is held every two years and provides a regional forum to evaluate activities of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and formulate recommendations for the coming biannual period. The Conference also analyzes the main challenges that both FAO and governments face, and represents an opportunity to establish a high level dialogue on rural development, fisheries, forestry, and food security and agriculture. Climate change and its impact on agricultural, forestry and fisheries production in Latin America and the Caribbean is a key item on the agenda.

This meeting is being organized by the African Union Commission, the Government of Kenya and the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), in collaboration with the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) of the World Bank. This conference will be held parallel to the First Conference of Ministers responsible for meteorology in Africa, organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in conjunction with the African Union Commission.
The conference on disaster risk reduction and its technical segment will aim to: discuss and adopt the extended Programme of Action for the Implementation of the Africa Regional Strategy for disaster risk reduction (2006-2015); define a regional mechanism and the resources to coordinate, support and monitor the implementation of the Africa Strategy and Programme of Action for disaster risk reduction (2006-2010); and link the outcomes of UNFCCC COP 15 to the extended Programme of Action for the Implementation of the Africa Regional Strategy for disaster risk reduction (2006-2015).
