1 May 2010: The 31st Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) met in Panama City, Panama, from 26-30 April 2010 and considered, among other issues, the impacts of climate change on agriculture, forestry and fisheries in the region.
26 April 2010: The latest issue of “Climate Frontlines,” a global forum on the internet for indigenous peoples, small islands and vulnerable communities sponsored by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in partnership with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Secretariat of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), features an article on the growing role of climate change in accelerating desertification and accentuating winter conditions for herding communities.
27 April 2010: The UN Institute for Training and Reaserch (UNITAR) held a seminar on Environmentally Induced Migration and Climate Change on 20 April 2010, in New York, US. The event was part of the Migration and Development Series, which is supported by the International Migration Organization (IOM), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and the MacArthur Foundation as partners.
26 April 2010: The First Ministerial Conference on the Environment and Renewable Energy within the framework of the 5+5 Mediterranean Dialogue convened on 26 April 2010, in Oran, Algeria, with representatives from Northern Mediterranean countries (Spain, France, Italy and Portugal) and five Southern Mediterranean countries (Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia).
25 April 2010: The need for Africa to speak with one voice and make itself heard at the upcoming 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to the UNFCCC, to be held in Cancun, Mexico, at the end of 2010, was highlighted during a seminar on climate change and Africa organized by the World Bank.
26 April 2010: UN World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Josette Sheeran has indicated that the intense droughts in Niger are escalating the humanitarian crisis and contributing to mass migration from rural to urban areas as well as to neighboring countries. She has announced that WFP will step up its aid to support 2.3 million people, particularly pregnant women and children, in the arid eastern Sahel region.
This workshop is organized by the UN Environment Programme-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC).
16 April 2010: The Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and representatives of the Drylands Development Center of the UN Development Programme (UNDP-DDC) have agreed on a two-year collaborative approach to support the Convention’s stakeholders to align their national action plans with the UNCCD 10-year strategy adopted in 2008.
This Regional Conference is held every two years and provides a regional forum to evaluate activities of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and formulate recommendations for the coming biannual period. The Conference also analyzes the main challenges that both FAO and governments face, and represents an opportunity to establish a high level dialogue on rural development, fisheries, forestry, and food security and agriculture. Climate change and its impact on agricultural, forestry and fisheries production in Latin America and the Caribbean is a key item on the agenda.
This meeting is being organized by the African Union Commission, the Government of Kenya and the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), in collaboration with the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) of the World Bank. This conference will be held parallel to the First Conference of Ministers responsible for meteorology in Africa, organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in conjunction with the African Union Commission.
The conference on disaster risk reduction and its technical segment will aim to: discuss and adopt the extended Programme of Action for the Implementation of the Africa Regional Strategy for disaster risk reduction (2006-2015); define a regional mechanism and the resources to coordinate, support and monitor the implementation of the Africa Strategy and Programme of Action for disaster risk reduction (2006-2010); and link the outcomes of UNFCCC COP 15 to the extended Programme of Action for the Implementation of the Africa Regional Strategy for disaster risk reduction (2006-2015).
