World Bank and GEF-supported REDD Programme to Hold Two Technical Workshops

January 2009: The Capacity Development for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (CD REDD) programme, will feature two technical workshops in the upcoming months to enhance the development of national greenhouse gas inventories and forest monitoring systems.

The programme is carried out by the Coalition of Rainforest Nations, with the support of the German Technical Cooperation Agency (GTZ), the German Ministry of Environment (BMU), the World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF), the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), the Brazilian Space Research Agency, the Indian Forest Service, and Global Observation of Forest and Land Cover Dynamics. The first workshop, to be held from 4-6 February 2009, in Brazil on “Land Use Area Change Assessment: The Experience of Existing Operational Systems,” will focus on the integration of remote sensing into monitoring and reporting systems. Experts from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will present. The second workshop to be held in March 2009, in India on “National Forest Inventory: The Experiences of Non-Annex I Countries” will feature presentations from IPCC experts and share information on the integration of inventories into monitoring and reporting systems.
