2 March 2009: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has released “The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2008,” which recommends that existing responsible fishing practices be more widely implemented and current management plans be expanded to include strategies for coping with climate change.
26 February 2009: The First Ministerial Forum on Water of the Group of 77 met in Muscat, Oman, from 23-25 February 2009, and brought together delegations from 130 member States who agreed on 21 conclusions and recommendations.
February 2009: A discussion paper titled “Coping with Water Scarcity: What Role for Biotechnologies?” has been published in FAO’s Land and Water Discussion Paper Series.
27 February 2009: The Intergovernmental Preparatory Meeting (IPM) for the 17th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD17) took place from 23-27 February 2009, at UN Headquarters in New York, US. The IPM’s role was to provide a forum to discuss policy options and possible actions to enable the implementation of measures and policies concerning agriculture, rural development, land, drought, desertification and Africa – the thematic issues under consideration during the CSD16/CSD17 two-year “implementation cycle.”
23 February 2009: Speakers at the opening session of the Intersessional Preparatory Meeting (IPM) for the 17th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD17) highlighted linkages between climate change and CSD17’s thematic cluster of issues: agriculture, Africa, drought, desertification, land and rural development. The IPM is meeting in New York, US, from 23-27 February 2009.

February 2009: The European Commission (EC) is funding the Transatlantic Dialogue on Climate Change and Security, which will be launched on 25 February 2009, by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in Washington DC, US.
18 February 2009: In an address to the UN Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters, which is holding its 51st session from 18-20 February 2009, in New York, US, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed that progress towards disarmament would free up resources to meet other challenges.
17 February 2009: Unless action is taken, 25 percent of the world’s food production may be lost by 2050 due to environmental breakdown, according to a UNEP report released during the 25th session of the UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum, which is convening from 16-20 February 2009, in Nairobi, Kenya.
17 February 2009: At the opening of the 25th Session of the Governing Council of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), which will run from 16-20 February 2009, at UN headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya called on world leaders to support a “Green New Deal” to address climate change and revitalize the global economy.
