31 July 2008: On his three-country tour of Latin America,
Srgjan Kerim, President of the UN General Assembly, has discussed climate
change with Michelle Bachelet, President of Chile, and addressed its importance
at a conference on the role of the UN in a globalized world.
25 July 2008: At the first global
scientific conference of the Global Cassava Partnership, held from 21-24 July,
2008 in Ghent, Belgium, scientists and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization
(FAO) called for a significant increase in investment in research and development needed to boost farmers’
yields and explore promising industrial uses of cassava, including biofuels production.

Commitment for the Fifth Summit of the Americas was presented during a
meeting of National Coordinators of the Summit Implementation Review Group held

2008: The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and IUCN
have published a report entitled “Agricultural Ecosystems, Facts and Trends.”
The Report presents facts and figures on trends in agricultural production and
consumption to help governments, farmers, consumers and industry better
understand the challenges facing the sustainable management of agricultural
ecosystems, such as meeting demands from a fast-growing world population,
adapting to climate change impacts, and managing the natural resources of an
increasingly depleted planet.
July 2008: Through its Global Information and Early Warning System on Food and Agriculture (GIEWS), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) provides regularly updated information on
the current situation of global agriculture and food security.
24 July 2008: The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) concluded the
work of its general segment, adopting 15 resolutions and 8 decisions, including
on strengthening the coordination of emergency humanitarian assistance.
23 July
2008: Opening the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) discussion on ‘mainstreaming
a gender perspective into all UN policies and programmes, women and
development, and the advancement of women,’ Rachel Mayanja, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on
Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, noted the particular vulnerability of
women to climate change and the food crisis.
21 July 2008: The Global Mechanism (GM) of the UN Convention
to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has announced that it has been invited by the
Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) to join an advisory
group assisting with the development of a Carbon Fund/Facility.
21 July: In a Joint Communiqué adopted during the forty-first Association
of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Ministerial Meeting, which took place from
20-21 July 2008, in Singapore, Ministers addressed the issues of climate
change, the food and energy crises, and disaster relief.
21 July 2008: The UN General Assembly
reconvened, on Monday, 21 July, to conclude the plenary meeting on the global
food and energy crisis that began on 18 July 2008. A number of countries,
including Cape Verde and Syria, stressed the interlinkages between the food,
energy and climate challenges.
