22 May 2008: On the occasion of International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD), which was observed on 22 May 2008, UN and UNEP dignitaries stressed the nexus between biological diversity, food supply and climate change.
May 2008: In the lead up to World Environment Day, which will be observed on 5 June 2008, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon likened fossil fuel dependence to a dangerous addiction, saying “addiction is a terrible thing. It consumes and controls us, makes us deny important truths and blinds us to the consequences of our actions. Our world is in the grip of a dangerous carbon habit.” This year, World Environment Day will be hosted in Wellington, New Zealand, under the theme “Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy.” 
21 May 2008: During their eighth annual gathering at UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) headquarters in Paris, France, UNESCO’s 19 Goodwill Ambassadors acknowledged that the Planet has never been subjected to such rapid and profound changes in the environment, and committed themselves to work to raise awareness about global warming and the need to modify human behavior towards greater caution and solidarity. 
7 May 2008: Speaking during the thematic debate on drought at the sixteenth session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD16), which took place at UN headquarters in New York, US, from 5-16 May 2008, a representative of the World Metrological Organization (WMO) provided an overview of the Organization’s work on drought and climate change. 
13 May 2008: Japan will host the G8 Environment Ministers Meeting from 24-26 May 2008, in Kobe, Japan. 
The UN Development Programme’s Adaptation Team has launched “Country Adaptation Profiles,” which are available for over 140 countries and provide two key services: linking climate change risks to national development priorities; and sharing up-to-date information on climate change adaptation, including ongoing efforts, science and assessments. 
The second issue of Vai Pasifika, the quarterly newsletter of the Pacific Islands Observing Systems that aims to encourage a unified approach to observing the Pacific climate ecosystem, was issued last month. 
The newest edition of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) flagship publication, the UNESCO Courier, focuses on climate change. 
The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) announced that World Tourism Day 2008 will focus on Tourism’s response to the challenges of climate change. It will be a yearlong campaign that will focus on increasing awareness of the Davos Declaration Process and encouraging its implementation by all stakeholders at a global level.
