G-77 Chair: Climate Change Negotiations will be “a Tough Battle”

26 September 2008: Speaking at the thirty-second meeting of

the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Group of 77 (G-77), Baldwin Spencer,

Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Antigua and Barbuda and Chair

of the G-77, welcomed the Group’s continued efforts to strengthen its

solidarity and unity in advancing its development agenda. Referring to the

recent debates on climate change, he warned that the position of developed

countries with respect to development cooperation does not bode well, noting

that it will be “a tough battle.”

Africa Commission Conference Examines African Economic Growth in the Context of Climate Change

held a thematic conference on employment and economic growth in the context of

climate change in Nairobi, Kenya, on 18 September. The event was the fourth in

a series of five thematic conferences, initiated by the Africa Commission,

FAO Releases Figures on Impact of High Food Prices on Hunger and Poverty

Hunger on the rise. Soaring prices add 75 million people to global hunger rolls 18 September 2008: On the eve of the opening of the 63rd

session of the UN General Assembly, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization

(FAO) released a briefing paper on the impact of high food prices on hunger,

which states that rising food prices pushed 75 million more people into hunger

and threatens efforts to realize the goal of halving the number of those in

hunger by 2015. The paper will inform a high-level event on the Millennium

Development Goals (MDGs), to be held on 25 September.

UNGA: Climate Change to be a Priority during 63rd Session

New General Assembly President calls for democratization of United Nations 16 September 2008: Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann, a former

foreign minister of Nicaragua and the new President of the UN General Assembly

(UNGA), opened its 63rd session with a call to democratize the UN in order to

deal more effectively with the world’s most pressing problems, including the
