15 June 2010: The Universal Postal Union (UPU), the UN specialized agency for postal services, has released a questionnaire to determine a detailed carbon footprint for Posts, including emissions from: electricity consumption in the buildings; fleet of vehicles; air conditioning; heating; travelling; electric vehicles; and staff commuting.
Last year, the UPU published its first global carbon inventory of the Posts, which evaluated emissions generated by the fleets of postal vehicles and the electricity consumed in postal facilities. UPU determined that Posts emitted a minimum of 26 million tons of carbon dioxide in 2008.
The International Bureau has developed tools to help member countries and their designated postal operators to collect their carbon emissions data. Member countries are expected to fill out the questionnaire and send their emissions data. The UPU report on member countries’ carbon footprint will be published at the end of 2010.
