UN-REDD Newsletter Highlights Latest REDD+ Activities

UNREDD Newsletter23 June 2010: The June Newsletter of the UN-REDD Programme highlights the Programme's latest activities in support of reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of carbon stocks (REDD+).The Newsletter highlights the UN-REDD Programme's participation in the climate talks which took place in Bonn, Germany, in early June, including the hosting of a side-event on measuring, reporting and verification (MRV) and monitoring systems. The Newsletter reports on a two-day workshop to set up a common understanding and framework for monitoring governance safeguards for REDD+, which was co-hosted with Chatham House. UN-REDD also participated at a conference in Kigali, Rwanda, which had a strong focus on REDD+ and moving towards a green economy.

The Newsletter also features an article authored by UN-REDD Programme Asia-Pacific Regional Coordinator, Tim Boyle, and West-Central Africa Regional Technical Advisor, Josep Gari, who outline how UN-REDD supports new partner countries. The commentary highlights support activities that have not required large-scale financing, so that a country can begin establishing foundations for REDD-readiness while financing becomes available. They also note that new partner countries can benefit from work that has already been done in the current pilot countries.

Pacifique Mukumba, Civil Society Representative to the UN-REDD Policy Board, provides a commentary on how monitoring of stakeholder engagement and fair participation is essential to establishing a transparent organization framework for the forest climate partnership that emerged from the Oslo climate conference.

The Newsletter also includes two reports by UN-REDD on national governance systems for REDD+, and on REDD+ and the rights of indigenous peoples. [UN-REDD June Newsletter]
