15 June 2010: The Inter-Academy Council committee conducting an independent review of the procedures and processes of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) held a meeting on 15 June 2010, at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
In a public session of the meeting, the committee heard several presentations on the IPCC assessment processes. Speakers included Robert Watson, Professor of Environment Sciences and Director of Strategic Development, University of East Anglia, and Chief Scientific Adviser, UK Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), as well as a former Chair of the IPCC from 1997 to 2002. Other speakers were: Christopher Field, Director of the Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology, Stanford, and a Co-Chair of Working Group II of the current IPCC assessment; John Christy, Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Science and Director of the Earth System Science Center, University of Alabama, Huntsville; and Hans von Storch, Professor from the Meteorological Institute, University of Hamburg, and Director of the Institute of Coastal Research, GKSS Research Center, Geesthacht, Germany. The Inter-Academy Council committee expects to deliver a peer-reviewed report with its findings and recommendations on the review of the procedures and processes of the IPCC by 30 August 2010. The Council is an organization of the world’s science academies that was established in 2000 to mobilize top scientists and engineers around the world to provide evidence-based advice to international bodies such as the UN and the World Bank.
