7 May 2008: Speaking during the thematic debate on drought at the sixteenth session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD16), which took place at UN headquarters in New York, US, from 5-16 May 2008, a representative of the World Metrological Organization (WMO) provided an overview of the Organization’s work on drought and climate change.
20 May: At a side event held during the ninth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, in Bonn, Germany, the European Commission presented its Natura 2000 network of conservation areas established to protect natural habitats.

21 May 2008: Speaking at the UN Economic and Social Council’s (ECOSOC) special session on the global food crisis, Léo Mérorès, President of ECOSOC, emphasized the “need to concentrate efforts on minimizing greenhouse emissions, deforestation and global warming, while finding ways to promote investments in agriculture [and] maximize the use of agro-science and technology.”
9 May 2008: Speaking during the UN Commission on Sustainable Development’s thematic discussion on inter-linkages and across-cutting issues, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) underlined the link between soil health and drought mitigation. The FAO representative noted that the world’s agriculture must not only guarantee food security, but also “a range of other supporting and regulating ecosystem services, in particular nutrient cycling, the hydrological regime and carbon sequestration.”
This Conference, which is supported by the International Hydrological Programme of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO-IHP), will be held in Kampala, Uganda, from 24-28 June 2008.
16 May 2008: The economic impact of climate change, rising food prices and a broad range of other trade, growth and development issues will be discussed at the OECD's annual ministerial meeting, to be held from 4-5 June 2008, in Paris, France.
13 May 2008: The UN’s “Billion Tree Campaign,” a grassroots campaign to plant trees around the globe, recently announced it has raised its target from one billion to seven billion trees. The campaign was launched in 2006 by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) as a response to the threat of global warming and other sustainability challenges related to biodiversity loss and water supply. Since its launch, the campaign has resulted in the planting of two billion trees, over half of which have been planted in African countries.
14 May 2008: In his opening address at the High-level Segment of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged governments and other actors to prepare agriculture systems to respond to the negative effects of climate change.
This synthesis document (HLC/08/5), drafted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), was prepared for the High-level Conference on World Food Security: the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy, which will take place in Rome, Italy, from 3-5 June 2008. The synthesis document pulls together the response options identified by preparatory expert and stakeholder consultation meetings and consultations, as identified in a number of technical documents. 14 May 2008: The 43rd Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the 34th Board of Governors meeting of the African Development Fund (ADF) took place on 14-15 May 2008, in Maputo, Mozambique. The Annual Meetings considered the theme “Fostering Shared Growth: Urbanization, Inequality and Poverty.”
