The Third Session of the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Tsunami and Other Coastal Hazards Warning System for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions (ICG/CARIBE EWS-III) convened in Panama City, Panama, from 12-14 March 2008.
In commemoration of the entry into force of the World Meterological Organization (WMO) Convention, which created the WMO on 23 March 1950, the WMO and the meteorological community celebrated World Meteorological Day on 25 March 2008. 
Responding to the recent storms in China, Sálvano Briceño, Director of the Secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR), said “the unprecedented scale, cost, and human impacts of China’s freak month of snowstorms, its worst in 50 years, herald a need for the world to get ready for new kinds of disasters.” 
In her address to the 2008 First Regular Session of the UNDP/UNFPA Executive Board UNFPA, Executive Director Thoraya Ahmed Obaid said the organization will “follow-up on the Bali Conference on Climate Change by strengthening efforts in policy guidance, emergency preparedness and disaster risk reduction.” 
18 January 2008: UN/ISDR’s 2007 disaster figures reveal that 2007 witnessed a marked increase in the number of floods compared with the average of the last seven years, and Asia was the continent hit hardest by disasters. 
The Secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) and the World Health Organization (WHO) launched the global campaign “Hospitals Safe from Disasters” at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The World Bank approved IDA financing totaling US$ 247 million to help Bangladesh recover from the dual shocks of the August flooding and November cyclone, which caused significant loss of life and enormous social, human, and economic costs.
