2 February 2009: On the occasion of World Wetlands Day, celebrated on 2 February 2009, the Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Ahmed Djoghlaf, delivered a message stressing the need for integrated management of land and water.
January 2009: The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has published two reports on sustainable bioenergy production and on linkages between energy, ecosystems and livelihoods.
22 January 2009: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) launched the Asia Pacific Water Forum’s Knowledge Hub for Irrigation Service Reform during a workshop held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 19- 21 January 2009. The Knowledge Hub will work towards the modernization of irrigation in the region.

21 January 2009: The Third Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) meeting of the Ministerial Process of the Fifth World Water Forum, hosted by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and co-organized by the World Water Council, is being held at UN Food and Agriculture (FAO) headquarters in Rome, Italy, from 21-23 January 2008. The meeting has gathered delegates from over 60 countries to continue negotiations on a global plan of action for adapting to global changes that affect the management of freshwater resources.

17 December 2008: During the ministerial conference “Water for Agriculture and Energy in Africa: the Challenges of Climate Change,” held from 15-17 December 2008, in Sirte, Libya, ministers from 53 African countries adopted the Sirte Declaration, in which they pledge to promote water development throughout the continent to fully exploit Africa’s agricultural and hydroenergy potential.

15 December 2008: Speaking at the conference on “Water for Agriculture and Energy in Africa: The Challenges of Climate Change,” taking place in Sirte, Libya, from 15-17 December 2008, FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf stressed the importance of water management for food security. During the event, ministers from 53 African countries will consider a “Blue Revolution” programme designed to harness Africa’s largely untapped water resources.

December 2008: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is organizing the “High-Level Conference on Water for Agriculture and Energy in Africa: The Challenges of Climate Change,” to be held from 15-17 December 2008, in Sirte, the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya.
December 2008: The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), published a policy brief entitled “Water Implications of Biofuel Crops: Understanding Tradeoffs and Identifying Options.” The Brief outlines impacts of biofuel production on water supply and food production, and seeks to provide options for policy makers in addressing resulting tradeoffs.
December 2008: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has invited comments on a draft report it commissioned entitled “Policies for fighting water scarcity and combating desertification.”
