discuss the role of groundwater in improving livelihoods in Africa under
conditions of rapid development and climate change, and one of the first

6 June 2008: The Ramsar Standing Committee held its 37th meeting from 2-6 June 2008, in Gland,
Switzerland. The Committee was charged with making the final preparations for
the documents to be considered at the tenth meeting of the Conference of the
Parties (COP10), which will take place in Changwon, Republic of Korea, from 28 October to 4 November 2008. During the meeting, the Committee approved
for transmittal to the COP a draft Resolution (DR) on climate change and
wetlands, and one on wetlands and biofuels.

10 June 2008: A new Atlas, comprised of photographs,
satellite imagery and narrative, illustrates changes to Africa’s environment
over the past 36 years. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) launched Africa: Atlas of Our Changing Environment
in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 10 June 2008, at the twelfth Session of the
African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN), which convened from
7-12 June 2008.

3 June 2008: The World Trade
Organization’s (WTO) Director-General, Pascal Lamy, addressed the High-Level
Conference on World Food Security, which met in Rome, Italy, from 3-5 June
2006, where he highlighted climate change’s impacts on agriculture, including
the potentially greater scarcity of water, and called attention to the
water-saving potential of international trade, by preventing the unnecessary
growth of agriculture in countries without access to sufficient water resources.

2008: Women are both the most exposed
to the consequences of climate change, and the best placed to influence changes
in behaviour, according to the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO). According to
UNESCO, this situation exists because women are most affected by natural
disasters while at the same time they play a key role in managing water and
fuel resources, thus wielding an essential influence for change.

June 2008: This workshop is
scheduled to take place on 1-2 July 2008 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and
will be organized under the auspices of the UN Economic Commission for Europe
Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and
International Lakes (Water Convention) and the Protocol on Water and Health to
the Water Convention. The event will address, inter alia: current
knowledge about adaptation and climate change; policy, legislative, institutional
and financial frameworks; forecasting, modelling and vulnerability, including
vulnerability of water-related sectors such as energy, agriculture and tourism;
and adaptation and coping measures.

29 May 2008: The World Bank announced a new
programme to address the impact of tropical glacier retreat in Bolivia, Peru, and
Ecuador. During the project launch in Lima, Peru, Carlos Felipe Jaramillo,
World Bank director for Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela noted that “Climate
change will heavily impact Andean countries’ economies, particularly the poor.
Adapting to climate change is crucial given the severe and irreversible effects
it will have on the region.”
