UNPFII to Consider Indigenous Peoples' Local Adaptation and Mitigation Measures

April 2010: The ninth session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), which will convene in New York, US, from 19-30 April 2010, will focus on “Indigenous peoples: development with culture and identity: articles 3 and 32 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.” This session will consider three reports on the implications of climate change for indigenous peoples’ local adaptation and mitigation measures, namely: a report on the results of the UNFCCC Copenhagen meeting; a study on reindeer herding; and a study on the extent to which climate change policies and projects adhere to the standards set forth in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Event: Ninth Session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

The ninth session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) will be organized around the theme “Indigenous peoples: development with culture and identity: articles 3 and 32 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.” The Forum is expected to consider the results of the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference and the implications for indigenous peoples’ local adaptation and mitigation measures.

UN Secretary-General's Report for Rio+20 Preparatory Committee Released

1 April 2010: The UN Secretary-General's report on "Progress to date and remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits in the area of sustainable development and analysis of the themes for the Conference" (A/CONF.216/PC/2) has been released in preparation for the 17-19 May 2010 Preparatory Committee for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, which will meet in Rio de Janerio, Brazil, in 2012 (Rio+20).

European Commission Adopts Proposal on Global Health

31 March 2010: Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action, is holding bilateral talks on climate change with developed and developing countries, to follow up on the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference. Hedegaard visited the US and Mexico in early March 2010, met with the Chinese delegation in late March in Brussels, Belgium, and will visit Maldives and India in early April.

UNFCCC Publishes Copenhagen Reports

30 March 2010: The UNFCCC has published the reports of the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) (FCCC/CP/2009/11 and FCCC/CP/2009/11/Add.1) and the  reports of the fifth session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties (COP/MOP 5)(FCCC/KP/CMP/2009/21 and FCCC/KP/CMP/2009/21/Add.1), which were held in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 7-19 December 2009.

UN-REDD and Indonesia Collaborate to Curb Deforestation

30 March 2010: The UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and Yale University have announced a call for papers for the second Global Conference on Environmental Governance and Democracy, which will take place at Yale University, New Haven, US, from 17-19 September 2010. The Conference will focus on the theme “Strengthening Institutions to Address Climate Change and Advance a Green Economy.”
