19 November 2008: Speaking at the Governors’ Global Climate
Summit, taking place from 18-19 November 2008, in Los Angeles, California, US,
UNFCCC Deputy Executive Secretary Richard Kinley highlighted that practical
state-level action can be an important step towards a low-emissions global
economy.
19 November 2008: In an address to the 303rd Session of the
Governing Body of the International Labour Organization (ILO) taking place in
Geneva, Switzerland, from 6-21 November 2008, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
explained that, while in Washington DC, US, for the G-20 summit, he had
stressed that the crisis is an opportunity to promote green economic
development.
17 November 2008: On 14 and 15 November 2008, UN
Secretary-General was in Washington, DC, US, to take part in the Group of 20
(G20) Financial Summit. In a statement to the assembled leaders, Ban Ki-moon
stated that “today’s financial crisis should not evolve into tomorrow’s human
crisis,” adding that leaders should not use it to justify neglecting other
critical issues such as poverty and hunger, the food crisis, and climate
change.
17 November 2008: The UN Framework Convention on Climate
Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat issued its report on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
in industrialized countries, which finds that emissions in these countries
continue to rise.
12 November 2008: The proposed annotated agenda for the 44th
meeting of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Executive Board has been
released.
11 November 2008: In a joint op-ed piece published in The International Herald Tribune on 10 November 2008 with Indonesian President
Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Danish Prime
Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for the
summit on the global financial crisis, scheduled to be held on 15 November
2008, in Washington DC, US, to seize the opportunity to tackle global warming.
November 2008: California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and
other US governors are co-hosting the Governors’ Global Climate Summit, which
will convene in Los Angeles, California, US, from 18-19 November 2008. In
addition to government and sub-national “climate leaders” from, inter alia,
China, India, the US, Brazil, Mexico and Canada, participants will include
representatives from non-governmental organizations, academia and the private
sector.
8 November 2008: Participants to the 44th session of the International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC), which was held in Yokohama, Japan, from 3-8 November 2008, discussed developments under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) regarding forests and their potential implications for tropical forests and the world tropical timber economy, but did not adopt a decision on this agenda item.
3 November 2008: The UN Environment Programme, (UNEP), with
the EU Member States Defense Environment Network, the US Department of Defense,
the Institute for Environmental Security, the US Environmental Protection
Agency, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Institute
for Defense Analysis, and the Environment and Security Initiative, is
co-sponsoring a meeting from 3-5 November 2008 in Paris, France, on “The
Importance of Military Organizations in Protecting the Climate: 2008.”
3 November 2008: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) debated the
Report of the Economic and Social Council for 2008 (document A/63/3 and
A/63/255), and the report of the Secretary-General on the Role of the Economic
and Social Council in the integrated and coordinated implementation of and
follow-up to the outcomes of the major United Nations conferences and summits,
in the light of relevant General Assembly resolutions, including resolution
61/16 (document A/63/63-E/2008/77).
