25 July 2008: At the conclusion of the first South Africa-EU Summit, held in Bordeaux, France,
participants adopted a Declaration on Climate Change in which they agreed on the
need to conclude
negotiations by the end of 2009 on a strengthened and effective global
agreement for the climate change regime post 2012.

Commitment for the Fifth Summit of the Americas was presented during a
meeting of National Coordinators of the Summit Implementation Review Group held
at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington DC,

2008: This year’s theme for the UN International Youth Day (IYD), which is
celebrated on 12 August, will be “Youth
and Climate Change: Time for Action.” IYD aims to provide the
opportunity to recognize the potential of youth, celebrate their achievements,
and bring together all stakeholders to ensure that young people are included in
decision-making at all levels.
24 July 2008: The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) concluded the
work of its general segment, adopting 15 resolutions and 8 decisions, including
on strengthening the coordination of emergency humanitarian assistance.
23 July 2008: In a 23 July 2008 Notification, the
Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is inviting parties
and relevant organizations to provide information on the status and trends of,
and threats to, mountain biological diversity, and progress made in the
implementation of the Programme of Work on Mountain Biological Diversity for
consideration by the fourteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific,
Technical and Technological Advice, tentatively scheduled to be held in
May/June 2010 in Bonn, Germany.

2008: Opening the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) discussion on ‘mainstreaming
a gender perspective into all UN policies and programmes, women and
development, and the advancement of women,’ Rachel Mayanja, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on
Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, noted the particular vulnerability of
women to climate change and the food crisis.
23 July 2008: In an editorial published in the Financial Times, Mohamed ElBaradei, Director-General
of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), calls for the creation
of an international organization on energy. In the article, which he indicates
represents his personal views, ElBaradei
describes the current energy crisis, stressing the need for environmentally
friendly alternatives to fossil fuels and coordinated action on energy and
related issues, including climate change.
21 July 2008: In a letter to member States, UN General
Assembly President Srgjan Kerim expressed his hope that the Assembly would
adopt a resolution taking a principled stand, demonstrating its relevance, and
sending a strong political message in support of agreeing on a comprehensive
global framework in 2009.

Assembly’s thematic debate, held on 8 July 2008, on the theme ‘Climate Change
and the Most Vulnerable Countries- the Imperative to Act.’

The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) continued the General Segment of
its Substantive Session with a panel discussion on “An inclusive and coherent approach to climate
change: The role of the UN system,” which was chaired by Jean-Marc Hoscheit (Luxembourg), Vice-President of
the Council. Noting the urgency of addressing the threat of climate change and
the need for system-wide action, he explained that the ECOSOC’s discussion was
centered on how the UN is coordinating its response to
the post-Bali road map of negotiations.
