21 October 2009: A policy forum on “The Forest Sector in the Green Economy,” organized by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on 15 October 2009, in Geneva, Switzerland, highlighted the need to promote and maximize the forest sector’s contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to reflect this in post-Kyoto climate change agreements.
21 October 2009: A workshop on “Responding to climate change: wood’s place in a global approach to green building,” was organized by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) during the Timber Committee Week, held from 12-16 October 2009. Among the workshop’s conclusions was agreement that green building is a solution to climate change mitigation: energy-efficient construction for new buildings and renovation of existing buildings can reduce 40-50% of energy used for space and water heating. 
20 October 2009: Addressing the World Green Roof Infrastructure Congress, held on 20 October 2009, in Toronto, Canada, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Ahmed Djoghlaf underscored the role of cities and local authorities for decisions relating to urban infrastructure, energy and transportation, all of which have a large impact both on climate change and biodiversity. 
14 October 2009: The UN Population Fund (UNFPA), together with the Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO), has launched a resource kit on climate change connections, focusing on gender and population and advocating that women are uniquely positioned as innovators, educators, caretakers, leaders and agents of change to address the risks of a changing climate. 
September 2009: The UN Secretary-General’s report on “Climate Change and its Possible Security Implications” (A/64/350) has been released. 
6 October 2009: The International Labour Organization (ILO) has a launched a new project to reduce the impact of changing weather patterns on the local economy. 
2 October 2009: The Governors’ Global Climate Summit 2, held from 30 September-2 October 2009, in Los Angeles, US, produced a declaration in which leaders present at the meeting committed to work together to pursue clean transportation and mobility, support national climate change legislation, and include forests in climate policy development. 
30 September 2009: National and local policies are needed to support walking and cycling as sustainable and alternative ways of transport in urban areas that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions as well as air and noise pollution, limit urban congestion and favor human health. This is the conclusion of the workshop titled “Safe and Healthy Walking and Cycling in Urban Areas” held in Prague, Czech Republic, from 24-25 September 2009.
