International Conference Adopts Declaration on Biodiversity Conservation and Use in an Era of Climate Change

17 February 2010: The International Conference on Biodiversity in Relation to Food and Human Security in a Warming Planet convened in Chennai, India, from 15-17 February 2010, with support from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and a number of other intergovernmental organizations.

CBD Executive Secretary Highlights Interlinkages between Biodiversity Loss and Climate Change

22 February 2010: In his statement on the occasion of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Workshop on Journalism and the Environment, which met in Bali, Indonesia, Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), highlighted the linkages between climate change and biodiversity loss, as well as the potential of ecosystem-based approaches to biodiversity conservation and management for adaptation to climate change.

Event: First PrepCom for UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD)

The UN General Assembly, in December 2009, adopted a resolution calling for a UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) to be convened in Brazil in 2012 (also referred to as Rio+20). The resolution established the dates for the preparatory committees leading to the event, and indicates the event should be focused on: a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; and the institutional framework for sustainable development.
