World Day to Combat Desertification is observed every year on 17 June. The UNCCD Secretariat has selected the following theme for the 2010 Day: "Enhancing soils anywhere enhances life everywhere." This theme was selected to emphasize the relationship between soil and biodiversity during International Year of Biodiversity.

1 March 2010: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is travelling to Los Angeles, US, from 28 February-2 March 2010, to meet with members of the creative community to mobilize support for the goals and mission of the UN, including its efforts to deal with climate change, global hunger and the financial crisis. Ban's travels are carried out under the framework of the Creative Community Outreach Initiative (CCOI), a collaboration of the UN with the entertainment industry on a number of projects that aims to raise the profile of critical global issues in partnership with the international film and television industries.
