March 2009: The Bonn Dialogues on Global Environmental Change will be held as a special event of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development and will take place on 1 April 2009, in Bonn, Germany. Panelists will discuss the role of education, training and adaptation and coping strategies used to deal with the world’s growing environmental hazards.

23 March 2009: Every year on 23 March, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services of its 188 members commemorate the 1950 entry into force of the Convention that created the Organization, which became a Specialized Agency of the UN a year later. 18 March 2009: The UN-REDD Programme, an initiative on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD), has approved US$18 million for activities in five pilot countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The Programme is sponsored by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the UN Development Programme, and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The approved sum constitutes roughly one-third of available funding under the Programme, and will be dedicated to measures such as monitoring, stakeholder engagement, enhancement of non-carbon benefits, and strengthening of institutional capacity.
