July 2009: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is coordinating multiple partners under a four-year multi-million euro capacity enhancement programme for implementation of Multilateral Environment Agreements (MEAs) in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. The European Commission (EC) ACP MEAs Programme is funded by the EU and aims to support and strengthen three existing regional institutions with environmental mandates to assist ACP countries in implementing their obligations under environmental agreements.

9 July 2009: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged every head of state or government to do more to address climate change. His statement came as the leaders of the G8 industrialized economies and the seventeen participants in the Major Economies Forum (MEF) on Energy and Climate released agreements indicating that they “recognize the scientific view that the increase in global average temperature above pre-industrial levels ought not to exceed 2 degrees C,” and noting that they “will work between now and Copenhagen, with each other and under the Convention, to identify a global goal for substantially reducing global emissions by 2050.”

3 July 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a note (FCCC/WEB/SAI/2009 3) on the synthesis and assessment report on the greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories submitted in 2009. The purposes of the synthesis and assessment are to facilitate the consideration of inventory data and other information across parties, and to identify issues for further consideration during the reviews of individual inventories.

2 July 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a note by the Chair (FCCC/KP/AWG/2009/10) on documentation to facilitate negotiations among parties during the ninth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP 9), which will take place from 28 September - 9 October 2009, in Bangkok, Thailand, and for the resumed ninth session to be held in Barcelona, Spain, from 2-6 November 2009.
