9 September 2008: In a lecture given at the Korea Green
Foundation, in Seoul, Republic of Korea, Yvo de Boer, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, provided an overview of climate change science and the state-of-play of negotiations under the Bali
Road Map. Noting that the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol will
end in 2012 and that science predicts warming will happen faster than
previously thought, he called for international action to combat climate change
to be “stepped up significantly.”
September 2008: The European Parliament Committee on the
Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, at its 8-10 September 2008 meeting
in Brussels, Belgium, is discussing, inter alia: supporting early demonstration
of sustainable power generation from fossil fuels; emission performance
standards for new passenger cars; geological storage of carbon dioxide; industrial
emissions (integrated pollution prevention and control); greenhouse gas
emission allowance trading system; and shared effort to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions.
7 September 2008: Experts gathered from 7-9 September 2008,
in Akureyri, Iceland, for the Polar Law Symposium, hosted by the UN University
(UNU) and the University of Akureyri, to discuss new challenges arising in the
Arctic and Antarctic.
4 September 2008: The Economic Commission for Latin America
and the Caribbean (ECLAC) seminar entitled “Food and Energy Crisis:
Opportunities and Challenges for Latin America and the Caribbean” took place in
Santiago, Chile, from 4-5 September 2008.

4 September 2008: In its review of EU energy policies, the
International Energy Agency (IEA) has concluded that the regional grouping is a
leader in climate change mitigation through its “bold and innovative” energy
policies, and welcomes the European Commission’s “climate and energy package”
proposed in January 2008.
September 2008: In a contribution to the September 2008
special issue of the ISO Focus magazine, Kandeh Yumkella, Director-General of
the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), notes the lack of capacity
of most developing countries to participate in the global trade of manufactured
goods.
3 September 2008: In an address to the Africa Carbon Forum,
currently taking place in Dakar, Senegal, until 5 September 2008, Yvo de Boer,
UNFCCC Executive Secretary noted that, despite being the hardest hit by climate
change, Africa is the continent that has benefited the least from the current
international climate change regime, including the Clean Development Mechanism
(CDM).
2 September 2008: The second meeting of the third World
Climate Conference’s International Organizing Committee (WIOC) is taking place
in Geneva, Switzerland, from 3-5 September 2008.
2 September 2008: Reacting to Hurricane Gustav and recent
flooding in India, Achim Steiner, UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive
Director and UN Under-Secretary-General, released a statement underscoring the
human and economic costs caused by weather events linked to climate change.
