October 2009: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has launched a synthesis report on the biodiversity/resilience/stability relationship in forest ecosystems.
7 October 2009: In a message delivered to the 2009 Global Renewable Energy Forum, organized by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) along with the Government of Mexico, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged business leaders and governments to invest in green energy schemes that move economies away from carbon-intensive energy strategies. 
7 October 2009: The European Commission has published a proposal on “Investing in the development of low-carbon energy technologies,” calling on public authorities, business and researchers to develop by 2020 the necessary technologies to address climate change, secure EU energy supply and ensure economic competitiveness. 
6 October 2009: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), in collaboration with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), has compiled a report that illustrates how the ocean’s carbon capture and storage systems (CCS) are being undermined by human activity, thereby harming their ability to “sequester” greenhouse gas emissions. 
6 October 2009: A legally binding instrument on pollutant release and transfer registers will enter into force on 8 October 2009, and help identify, among others, emitters of certain greenhouse gases across Europe. 
3 October 2009: Among the 36 decisions adopted before the final gavel came down at 7:50 am on Saturday, 3 October, at the ninth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 9) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), was a decision that identifies two indicators – the proportion of the population in affected areas living above the poverty line and land cover status – as the minimum subset of impact indicators required for reporting by affected countries beginning in 2012, along with additional, optional impact indicators. 
1 October 2009: Speaking at Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed that “if ever there were a time to act in a spirit of renewed multilateralism ... it is now.” 
October 2009: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has posted several new documents for its 31st session and sessions of the Panel’s Working Groups, which will take place from 26-29 October 2009, in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia. 
30 September 2009: The World Bank has presented the results of an Economics of Adaptation to Climate Change (EACC) study, which estimates costs of adaptation to climate change in developing countries will be in the order of US$75-100 billion per year for the period 2010-2050, considering a 2°C warmer world.
