25 September 2009: Growing wood energy consumption linked to efforts to mitigate climate change is increasing the likelihood of severe competition for wood on traditional forest products markets. There is therefore a need to establish realistic targets for renewable energy sources, balancing traditional wood processing industry needs with growing energy needs, taking into account the sustainable availability of woody biomass in all its various forms, in the short, medium and long term.
24 September 2009: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a report entitled “Climate Change Science Compendium 2009.” The report, compiled in association with scientists around the world, reviews some 400 major scientific contributions to our understanding of Earth Systems and climate change that have been released through peer-reviewed literature, or from research institutions, over the last three years. 
24 September 2009: A roundtable convened during the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) General Conference received a comprehensive presentation of the Agency’s work to help Member States reduce, mitigate and adapt to climate change. 
24 September 2009: The report of the 40th meeting of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Methodologies Panel (Meth Panel) has been released and is now available on the CDM website. 
23 September 2009: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has released a story on the importance of proper crop management for mitigating climate change, and the role nuclear technologies play in effective soil management. 
22 September 2009: The UN Summit on Climate Change convened in New York, US, on 22 September 2009, bringing together approximately 100 Heads of State and government. At the close of the Summit, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon voiced optimism that negotiations for a new climate agreement are on the “right track,” but also warned that momentum must be maintained to ensure success in Copenhagen. 
17 September 2009: UNESCO’s OceanObs’09 Conference, held from 21-25 September 2009, in Venice, Italy, will seek to take stock of the progress made over the last ten years, presenting scientific results based on global ocean observation, considering the related societal and economic benefits, examining the present frontiers of global ocean observations, and looking at the way ahead in the coming decade. 
4 September 2009: Working Group (WG) III of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) held the second lead author meeting for the Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation (SRREN) from 1-4 September 2009, in Oslo, Norway. The meeting was preceded by an expert meeting on Modeling Renewable Energies, held from 30-31 August 2009. 
18 September 2009: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) held their first joint seminar on “Use of Radio Spectrum for Meteorology: Weather, Water and Climate Monitoring and Prediction.” The seminar was held at WMO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, from 16-18 September 2009. 
18 September 2009: A new book titled The Economics of Climate Change Mitigation: Policies and Options for Global Action Beyond 2012, launched by the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), concludes that a full-fledged global carbon market would cost just one-tenth of a percent of average world annual GDP growth between 2012 and 2050 to achieve moderately ambitious climate targets. Put differently, this would mean a 4% reduction in GDP in 2050 compared to a scenario where no policy action is taken. Over the same period, world GDP growth is projected to grow by more than 250%.
