Restricted Union representing 48 European public postal operators, has agreed
to form a joint technical committee with the Universal Postal Union’s (UPU)
Sustainable Development Project Group, which will establish measures to reduce the
sector’s carbon dioxide emissions.

2008: In his inaugural speech to the second meeting of the
International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Group on International
Aviation and Climate Change (GIACC), Roberto Kobeh González, President of the
ICAO Council, noted the work carried out by the Organization and the UNFCCC
Secretariat in coordinating their work plans, and highlighted the importance
for the Group to agree on aspirational goals on fuel efficiency.

July 2008: The World Ports Climate
Conference took place from 9-11 July 2008 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and was
organized around the theme “World
Ports for a Better Climate.” The conference brought together participants representing over 50 ports from 35
countries and concluded with the adoption of the World Port Climate
Declaration, in which they committed to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
and improve air quality.

fifth Magdeburg Environmental Forum held from 3-4 July 2008, in Magdeburg,
Germany, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and car manufacturer
Daimler called for the establishment of infrastructure for electric and
fuel-cell vehicles.

8 July 2008: The Group
of Eight Industrialized Countries (G8) Hokkaido Toyako
Summit took place from 7-9 July 2008
in Japan. On 8 July, the G8 leaders agreed on a Document on Environment and
Climate Change. The leaders of the G8
agreed to share with parties to the UNFCCC the vision of a goal of achieving at
least 50% reduction of global emissions by 2050, recognizing that this global
challenge can only be met by the contributions from all major economies,
consistent with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and
respective capabilities.

Organization (IMO) agreed that the theme for the 2009 World
Maritime Day would be “Climate change: a challenge for IMO too!”
