Event: First PrepCom for UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD)

The UN General Assembly, in December 2009, adopted a resolution calling for a UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) to be convened in Brazil in 2012 (also referred to as Rio+20). The resolution established the dates for the preparatory committees leading to the event, and indicates the event should be focused on: a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; and the institutional framework for sustainable development.

African Ministers Welcome Calls for New and Innovative Resources for Climate Change

21 February 2010:  A meeting of the Committee of African Ministers of Finance and Planning and Governors of Central Banks (Committee of Ten) recognized the importance of pursuing a low-carbon growth path, but emphasized that the additional costs to achieve it should not be at the expense of existing under-resourced development needs.

UNESCAP Scheme Turns Waste to Carbon Credits

22 February 2010: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and Waste Concern, a Bangladesh non-governmental organization, have launched a project aimed at ensuring solid waste development strategies become decentralized, pro-poor, low-carbon and self-financing through the sale of carbon credits.

Event: High-Level Dialogue on Financing for Development

This year’s Dialogue will focus on the overall theme “The Monterrey Consensus and Doha Declaration on Financing for Development: status of implementation and tasks ahead.” The first day of the Dialogue will consist of plenary meetings chaired by the President of the UN General Assembly, and the second day will be devoted to three interactive multi-stakeholder round tables followed by an informal interactive dialogue with the participation of all relevant stakeholders. The Dialogue will result in a summary by the President of the General Assembly.

World Bank Institute Climate Change Practice Launches e-Bulletin

February 2010: The World Bank Institute Climate Change (WBICC) Practice has launched its first quarterly e-Bulletin, which reports on activities in its four programmes, namely: cities and climate change; innovation in carbon finance; leadership and coalition building in climate change; and climate adaptation in water, agriculture and natural resource management.

Commonwealth Releases Study on Climate Change, Fisheries, Trade and Competitiveness

26 January 2010: The Commonwealth Secretariat has published a study titled "Climate Change, Fisheries, Trade and Competitiveness: Understanding impacts and formulating responses to Commonwealth small States," which focuses on the likely impacts of climate change on the trade and competitiveness of the fisheries sector in small developing Commonwealth States.

World Bank Launches Book on Evaluating Climate Change and Development

18 February 2010: The InfoShop of the World Bank has launched a book titled “Evaluating Climate Change and Development,” a compilation of papers presented at the International Conference on Evaluating Climate Change and Development, which was organized by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Evaluation Office and partners, in Alexandria, Egypt, in May 2008.

Event: 2010 Climate Investment Funds (CIF) Partnership Forum

Participants at this Forum will seek to share lessons learned from the CIF design process and from early implementation of CIF-funded programs. The 2010 CIF Partnership Forum will be preceded by the following associated CIF meetings, both of which will convene from 15-17 March: PPCR and CTF pilot countries meeting; and CIF Trust Fund Committee meetings.
